At one point, the suspect removed the handgun from his waistband and pointed it at officers.

The suspect, who police said pointed a handgun at officers, remained in the hospital Monday afternoon, Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack told reporters.

He said officers performed life-saving measures on the suspect, who is in custody and in stable condition.

A student resource officer immediately responded to the classroom where the student was located.

There we no other injuries in the incident at Waukesha South High School. Jack says the resource officer went to the classroom to confront the student and get students in the room to safety.

Waukesha South High School is "safe and secure" after a student was shot by an officer for pointing a gun at law enforcement, police say.

Waukesha is a city of about 70,000 residents 20 miles west of Milwaukee.

Police didn't respond to a phone message seeking details of what took place.

The Waukesha Freeman reported that a male was put into an ambulance.

Terry Schuster, a spokeswoman for the school district, confirmed the incident to The New York Times, telling the newspaper the student "did not comply to hand over the gun".

Jack said police are not looking for any other suspects.
