CN strike causing 'emergency' shortages in Quebec's propane supply, Legault says

Premier Kenney calls on Trudeau to end CN Rail strike

Quebec's propane could run out in five day if CN strike lingers, premier warns

Quebec has already begun rationing its remaining propane reserve of 12 million litres and is trying find trucks to bring more of the fuel into the province, Legault said.

"What I'm saying is we can not afford a strike for many days", Legault said. "We've watched it fail our exporters, our farmers at times of harvest, and we've seen nothing more than kid gloves from this government", NDP MLA Trent Wotherspoon said.

Federal Conservative leader Andrew Scheer also issued a statement calling on Trudeau to get CN back to work saying the strike is hurting all aspects of the economy, from agriculture to manufacturing and mining.

"The strike can not last", Legault said in an unprompted statement to journalists in Quebec City.

He expressed hope for a settlement between the railway and the union, but called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the opposition parties to pass back-to-work legislation if necessary ahead of Parliament's scheduled return on December 5.

Priority has been given to health centres and retirement residences that rely on propane heating as well as farms, which use it to dry grain and heat barns and greenhouses.

Moe said he's spoken to Garneau and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland about the toll the strike will take on jobs and profits in agriculture, energy and mining. With no pipelines to carry the fuel into Quebec, the province is particularly reliant on rail transportation from supply hubs in the Prairies and in Sarnia, Ont., said Nathalie St-Pierre, chief executive of the Canadian Propane Association.

"It's having a huge impact".

"We're very concerned with the stoppage when it comes to the farmers", she said. She added that 85 per cent of propane in Quebec is transported by rail.
