As anyone on Twitter knows, tweet-based conversations can quickly become messy, making it hard to keep track of actual replies amid pointless GIFs, spam messages, trolling and more. In addition to hiding the tweet, Twitter will prompt the user to choose whether they would like to block the people who shared the hidden tweet. "To make this happen, we need to change how conversations work on our service".

"We learned that the feature is a useful new way to manage your conversations", Twitter wrote in a blog. In Canada, where the company first started testing the feature, Twitter says 27 percent of people who had their replies hidden by another user said they would think about their actions in the future. Public figures such as politicians and journalists have not been hiding replies "very often" so far, the company added.

The feature is now available on the web and also both main and Twitter lite mobile apps.
