Sweden says it is dropping Julian Assange rape investigation

Nov 19 - Swedish prosecutors drop the rape investigation for a second time, saying the evidence is not strong enough to bring charges against Assange.

Swedish prosecuting authorities at the time said: "The preliminary investigation concerning allegations against Julian Assange was resumed on 13 May 2019 after Assange left the Ecuadorian embassy in London".

Assange skipped bail in Britain to avoid possible extradition and took refuge in the embassy in 2012.

Ms Persson said: "I would like to emphasise that the injured party has submitted a credible and reliable version of events".

She said: 'I'm holding this press conference to inform you I'm discontinuing the preliminary investigation'.

Israel captured the West Bank and east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war and quickly began settling the newly conquered territory. The Palestinians and the global community say that settlements are illegal and prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Assange, a 48-year-old Australian, has repeatedly denied the sex crime allegations, calling them part of a plot to discredit him and secure his eventual transfer to the United States.

The Australian-born Assange made global headlines in early 2010 when WikiLeaks published a classified USA military video showing a 2007 attack by Apache helicopters in Baghdad that killed a dozen people, including two Reuters news staff.

Assange was captured by authorities in Britain in 2010 following the rape allegations in Sweden. "Both my own and my client's judgment is that my client's account is supported by solid written evidence", she said.

June 3 - A Swedish court rejects a request from prosecutors for Assange to be detained in absentia, making it more hard to have him extradited to Sweden.

The decision likely ends the threat of extradition to Sweden for the whistleblower, who is wanted by the USA on espionage charges and is now being held at a British high-security prison.

The United States has requested that he be extradited there, where he is allegedly suspected of violating the country's laws on espionage.

Wikileaks editor-in-chief Kristinn Hrafnsson dismissed the Swedish rape allegations on Tuesday and said his focus was now exclusively on keeping his organisation's founder from being extradited to the US.

Julian Assange's father John Shipton said his son had been through "nine years of ceaseless psychological torture". It finally recognises that Julian Assange adamant denial of wrongdoing is the truth.

Prosecutors told reporters the decision to drop the inquiry had been taken after interviews with seven witnesses in the case.

WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Kristinn Hrafnsson told supporters that their focus should now shift to the most important "threat" that Assange was "warning about for years: the belligerent prosecution of the United States and the threat it poses to the First Amendment". "It is the U.S. that must now be persuaded to drop it's unfair and risky pursuit of Assange".
