The new DBX is late to the luxury SUV market, where Lamborghini and Porsche have had successful SUVs for years. The brand is hoping that the sleek SUV will broaden its appeal and deliver a financial boost.

And perhaps more will come from Wales too, as the company's first SUV is created to allow the DBX platform to be used in future electric models of Aston.

The firm's share price has plunged this year as sales underperformed after a stock market flotation and the global automotive industry has had a torrid year.

Aston hopes to encourage more women buyers with its new offering and has received input from a female advisory body on the choice of certain features such as separate central arm rests and the design of the glovebox.

However, Palmer said in an interview with CarAdvice that the goal was not to mass produce the DBX, rather to give Aston customers the option to buy an SUV from the brand.

"If our volumes are slightly north of 6,000 this year, obviously you're adding another ultimately 4 or 5,000 so it's a big chunk of volume for us", said Palmer.

The newly revealed DBX has had its trial build at the Welsh factory and it is expected to be in full production in the second quarter of next year.

"They've been brought into the process of design really far in advance to make sure that the vehicle, not just from a design standpoint but from functionality, size and space perspectives, works for, not just men but women, as well", Laura Schwab, president of Aston America, said on Tuesday.
