Judges question continued secrecy of parts of Mueller report

Mr. Trump's lawyers told the justices a stay of the appeals court decision was necessary so that the justices could review a case of first impression, warning against the implications of the lower court's move if Mr. Trump has to turn over the personal financial records at this time.

"The Committee will file an opposition to the Trump Applicants' motion for a stay of issuance of the D.C. Circuit's mandate pending disposition of their upcoming certiorari petition", House attorney Douglas Letter said in a letter to the court. "Was the president not truthful in his responses to the Mueller investigation?".

If the Supreme Court declines to hear Trump's appeal, the documents would have to be handed over to lawmakers.

Last week, Trump's former deputy campaign chairman, Rick Gates, suggested in testimony during a jury trial in a criminal case that Trump talked to longtime adviser Roger Stone about WikiLeaks during the 2016 campaign.

In court papers, House lawyers cited one redaction that "appears to relate to grand jury evidence indicating that President Trump sought or obtained advance knowledge of WikiLeaks's plans during the campaign" to release damaging emails related to Hillary Clinton's campaign.

And with an impeachment inquiry underway, that's no small detail.

At the court hearing Monday, Griffith asked Letter whether the material sought was still relevant, given the apparent recent focus on Ukraine as opposed to the Mueller report.
