Has Microsoft thrown in the towel

Microsoft is chucking in the towel after not scoring many points in the personal digital assistant death match, and will drop Cortana on Apple's iOS and Google's Android operating systems by January 31 next year. For those who're unaware, the Cortana app is also used for accessing various settings and updating firmware for Surface headphones. However, there's a chance that Cortana won't be removed from all the regions. It tried competing with Siri on iOS and Google Assistant on Android, but Cortana failed to gain traction. It is still not confirmed whether or not the Cortana app will be available in the US. The company has revealed that the Cortana app will stop working after January 31st, 2020 for people in Australia, Canada and the UK.

Microsoft also posted a support page on its website where it stated that Cortana would be integrated into Microsoft 365.

Microsoft is announcing the death of Cortana's mobile apps today. As per the recent development, it seems like the company is indeed killing off its Cortana assistant from the launcher.

According to Microsoft, it will update the Microsoft Launcher by January 31 in order to remove Cortana.

After that date, any reminders or lists users now have on the Cortana app can be accessed through Microsoft's free To Do app, which is automatically synced.

Cortana's absence on mobile outside of the U.S. also poses a bit of a problem for the Surface Headphones, which rely on the Cortana app for updates and such, but Microsoft will probably have a solution ready by January. All the reminders and lists will be automatically synced to the Microsoft To Do App, which can be freely downloaded on one's smartphone.
