Todd Phillips Now Open to a Joker Sequel But Only Under Certain Conditions

Todd Phillips will do 'Joker 2' on one condition

Joker's success at the box office, having earned over $995 million worldwide on top of being the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, as well as Joaquin Phoenix's outspoken desire to continue Arthur Fleck's story, might be too enticing for Phillips to completely turn his back on a potential sequel.

The hit movie will surpass $1 billion at the global box office today, according to Forbes.

The critically-acclaimed film has already acquired $998 million worldwide, almost seven weeks after it's premiere, according to Forbes.

The mythosaurs were wiped out of canon when the expanded universe was reset, but thanks to The Mandalorian , they're back in play. Speaking with Slash Film, he said: "On this one, I let myself be, at least in the way I was approaching the thing, freer".

Domestically, the film, which was made on a $62.5 million budget, has brought in $316.692 million domestically.

Joaquin Phoenix's twisted take on the Batman villain marks the seventh movie this year (and first that's not from Disney or Marvel) to join the elusive billion-dollar club.

While Joker may be the most successful R-rated movie worldwide, MarketWatch points out that when it comes to domestic receipts, Mel Gibson's 2004 biblical film, "The Passion of the Christ", still leads.

Allen Iverson reacts to Blazers’ Carmelo Anthony signing
Anthony hasn't played since November 8, 2018, when the Rockets decided he was no longer a part of their plans. Anthony averaged 13.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game across 10 appearances with the Rockets.

Joker may have divided critics - with a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes - but it's now the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Phoenix (born Bottom) was previously nominated for a supporting actor Oscar for Gladiator in 2000, and a leading actor Oscar for Walk the Line in 2005 and The Master in 2012. It's just the seventh movie in WB history to cross that billion dollar line. Phillips recently spoke with the Los Angeles Times about a possible Joker follow-up, and what would have to be in it.

He said: "It's not the box office but the reception that's been vindicating". "In the second or third week of shooting, I was like, 'Todd, can you start working on a sequel? But I was really thinking, 'This is the very thing that would excite this kind of personality". "It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that this does". As far as profits go, THR mentioned in its writeup that Joker will generate approximately $600 million for Warner Bros and its partners on the movie, Village Roadshow and Bron, each of which have a 25% stake in Joker.
