Jimmy Carter, the oldest living former president, was recovering and remained hospitalized Tuesday after brain surgery that morning "to relieve pressure on his brain" following bleeding caused by a series of falls, his office said.

Carter is the longest-lived USA president, and he is also a cancer survivor, having been successfully treated for melanoma that had spread to his liver and his brain, which was diagnosed in 2015.

He is resting comfortably and is with his wife, Rosalynn.
