Jimmy Carter, the oldest living former president, was recovering and remained hospitalized Tuesday after brain surgery that morning "to relieve pressure on his brain" following bleeding caused by a series of falls, his office said.

Carter is the longest-lived USA president, and he is also a cancer survivor, having been successfully treated for melanoma that had spread to his liver and his brain, which was diagnosed in 2015.

He is resting comfortably and is with his wife, Rosalynn.

In May, Mr Carter underwent surgery for a broken hip after falling at his home in Georgia.

"One of the things Jesus taught was: If you have any talents, try to utilize them for the benefit of others", President Carter said. Mr. Carter fell twice more in October 2019, and was hospitalized for a fractured pelvis.
