Mr Bercow's interventions into the Brexit process proved controversial for many, but his unique style also raised the profile of the job - for better or worse.

Mr. Hoyle, who had been deputy speaker since 2010, was elected by lawmakers after four rounds of voting via secret ballot.

Our Political Correspondent Paul McNamara has been following the process.

Sir Lindsay was reluctantly dragged to his chair as part of a tradition dating back to the days when speakers could be sentenced to death if they displeased the monarch.

Despite taking a mild-mannered approach compared to Bercow, Hoyle has not been afraid to stand up to prime ministers, even clashing with Tony Blair when he led the Labour Party over his stance on tuition fees and Gibraltar.

But with a national election coming on December 12, the new Speaker's first job will depend on what government the public elect.

It means there are now seven candidates in the running.

The MP for Camberwell and Peckham threw her hat into the ring immediately after Mr Bercow announced he would be stepping down.

Sir Lindsay used his speech prior to the vote by paying tribute to a "great hero" of his, former speaker Betty Boothroyd, who watched from the side gallery.

Welling up with emotion, Sir Lindsay also paid tribute to his late daughter Natalie, who died previous year. Runners-up were Eleanor Laing, who is also a deputy speaker, and Labour legislator Chris Bryant.

Tory veteran Sir Edward Leigh and Meg Hillier were eliminated in the first round.

Moreover, according them, simulations show that these patterns are highly unlikely to be due to chance. Griffin and Shams now tell Bloomberg that just a single whale was likely behind the behavior.

Eight candidates are in the running to take over as Commons Speaker.

A British Conservative legislator has dropped out of the race to become the next House of Commons speaker.

They were followed by former Church of England vicar and now Labour MP Chris Bryant, Labour MP Harriet Harman, parliament's longest-serving female MP, and another deputy speaker, Labour's Rosie Winterton. Critics accused him of favoring anti-Brexit politicians at the expense of supporters of leaving the European Union.

MPs will then continue to vote until one candidate obtains more than half of the votes. Bercow retired last week after a decade as speaker that saw him become a central, and contentious, player in Britain's Brexit drama.

His successor will run the daily business of the Commons, keeping lawmakers in line with robust cries of "Order!"

There are reportedly seven contenders looking to succeed Bercow, including three of his deputies.
