Houston Astros Fire Brandon Taubman For Taunting Female Reporters

The team announced Thursday that Brandon Taubman, the Astros' assistant general manager, was sacked for his postgame outburst aimed at female reporters following Saturday night's American League Championship Series victory.

A statement released by the team said Taubman's conduct did not reflect the organization's values, "and we believe this is the most appropriate course of action".

When the story by SI's Stephanie Apstein originally was published Monday, the Astros called it "misleading and completely irresponsible", accusing her of fabricating the story.

Osuna was accused and suspended for alleged domestic violence earlier this season before the Astros made a much-maligned move to pick him up. The organization tried to walk that back, Tauban issued an apology for his vulgar language and an Houston launched an internal investigation. Subsequent interviews have revealed that Taubman's inappropriate comments were, in fact, directed toward one or more reporters.

"Accordingly we have terminated Brandon Taubman's employment with the Houston Astros".

"We are thankful to Major League Baseball and to everyone that cooperated in the investigation".

The Astros, who are 2-0 down in the World Series against the Washington Nationals, had initially issued a strident defense of Taubman's conduct, insisting that the executive had merely been voicing support for Osuna after a shaky performance. "I think it's a core value for baseball, and I think we have to be tremendously concerned when we have an incident that attracts this much attention".

"But as we continued to investigate, it was clear that they were meant to be heard".

Major League Baseball separately interviewed eyewitnesses to Taubman's actions on Saturday in the Astros' celebratory clubhouse.

Yahoo Sports reporter Hannah Keyser was in the Astros clubhouse and confirmed the Sports Illustrated report, as did two Houston Chronicle reporters.

In a statement, the Astros said the team had sacked assistant general manager Brandon Taubman after an investigation found he had targeted one or more journalists during a freakish locker room rant last Saturday. And I'm not going to get into the details of that. It was wrong; it was the Astros' decision.

In the clubhouse, Taubman reportedly shouted a few times how happy he was the Astros got relief pitcher Roberto Osuna. But regardless of who wrote it and who approved it, it was wrong. "We've learned a lesson about it".

"There's nothing about that first statement that was correct or that's defensible", Luhnow said.

"I continue to be disappointed and just sorry it happened", Hinch said. "So in that respect, yes, I did".

"I'm really concerned at this point about the underlying substance of the situation and what the atmosphere was and how it came to be", Manfred told reporters.
