Jacob Markstrom made 38 saves and the Vancouver Canucks built a big enough lead in the first period to defeat the New York Rangers 3-2 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. The Rangers scored 44 power play goals on 227 power play opportunities last season. They were 0-for-20 on the man advantage before the score and entered as one of two National Hockey League teams without a power-play goal this season. The Rangers outshot the Canucks 17-7 in the final 20 minutes.

In the second period, Hughes redirected a Matt Tennyson wrist shot that deflected once more off the backside of Miles Wood and into the net.

Thatcher Demko was solid in the three games the Canucks needed him to play while Jacob Markstrom tended to a family matter. That created more space and shooting responsibility at the point for rookie defenceman Quinn Hughes, who replaced Alex Edler on the top unit and was able to get one-timers on target.

Hughes' Devils defeated second overall pick Kaapo Kakko and the Rangers 5-2 for their first win of the season.
