Asked whether Eddie Jones, the man who masterminded Australia's downfall in Oita and will finish with a flawless 7-0 record over Cheika at Test level, would figure into the equation, Castle gave little indication they would try and wrangle the former Wallabies coach home from England and the remaining two years of his contract with the Rugby Football Union.

He was also responsible for a crucial defensive rip, as Australia pressed for another score before Watson's final intervention and Farrell's fourth conversion took England into 40-point territory.

However, in a separate interview with reporters, Castle described the World Cup outcome as "incredibly disappointing", before taking it a step further when assessing the Wallabies' modest returns over the last four years under Cheika.

"I think it's no secret that I've pretty much got no relationship with the CEO and not much with the chairman".

"I just wanted to speak to my wife and tell a few people up there [on the Rugby Australia board] about it".

"I knew from the final whistle, but I just wanted to give it some time to settle down".

Cheika insisted he had "no regrets" about making the call, but added that he would love to have stayed on as coach.

"So I'm the type of person, the type of man, that always backs what he says. You've got to suck that up sometimes", said Cheika, a former teammate of Jones at Sydney's Randwick club.

Cheika made his fortune away from the game in a clothing business specialising in jeans, and he has now admitted he has no need to remain in rugby.

The outspoken coach came under immediate pressure in the wake of the defeat and confirmed on Sunday he was no longer Australia's coach.

"It will be very hard to replicate the thrill and excitement of coaching at global level to be honest". I'm not an Australian, I'm coaching England; I'm an England coach, if you hadn't worked that out. I haven't really thought about it, so I'll see what happens next.

The very best teams have a game-plan they trust but also an ability to vary their tactics if the situation demands it.

"Name me another team in the world that plays at the absolute top level that wins so many of their games".

"I'm not looking for an excuse there or an excuse here".

"So you either follow it, which I've tried to do over this last 12 months or you make the choice not to be in it". We will be investigating every possible way of how we beat them.

"All we wished to cease used to be play neatly for him tonight".

Once hailed as the saviour of Australian rugby after leading the Wallabies to the 2015 final, Cheika's second attempt at winning the Webb Ellis Cup ended in a trainwreck but he defended his attack at all costs tactics and constant tinkering with the lineups.
