Johnson & Johnson recalls lot of baby powder due to asbestos

Johnson & Johnson recalls lot of baby powder

J&J is voluntarily recalling the lot, #22318RB, and encouraging people who bought the product to discontinue use.

J&J said it was checking where the bottles were shipped, if the tested bottle is counterfeit or authentic and whether the sample might have been contaminated during testing.

Lawsuits have been filed against the company in the United States alleging that asbestos in its talcum powder causes cancer.

For years, J&J has defended against lawsuits linking its talcum powder to cancer by saying the products are safe and don't contain asbestos.

You could also lift a person's finger and put it on a fingerprint reader, but at least you have to touch the victim to do that. In fact, if you're asleep and someone points your phone at your face - voila! Then, the second it sees your face it'll unlock.

In a series of investigations by the New York Times and Reuters, internal documents from Johnson & Johnson revealed some company executives anxious about the talcum products, including possible asbestos contamination, further government regulation and public backlash over health concerns.

Containers of Johnson's baby powder made by Johnson and Johnson are displayed on a shelf on July 13, 2018 in San Francisco, Calif.

"The FDA's testing on prior occasions, and as recently as last month, found no asbestos", said spokesman Ernie Knewitz. The findings of the investigation stated that Baby Powder periodically tested positive for tiny amounts of asbestos between 1971 and the early 2000s.

Reuters news agency on December 14 published a special report detailing that the company knew for decades that cancer-causing asbestos could be found in its talc. That could cost the company billions of dollars in settlement costs. The company, along with other health care stocks, has lagged the broader market due to a series of legal concerns.

J&J said in February that it had received subpoenas and inquiries related to its iconic baby-powder products from the U.S. Justice Department, the SEC and the top Democrat on the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

The recall was issued "in response to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) test indicating the presence of sub-trace levels of chrysotile asbestos contamination (no greater than 0.00002 percent) in samples from a single bottle purchased from an online retailer", the release explained.
