Space station's 2 women prep for 1st all-female spacewalk

The Expedition 61 astronauts now aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are preparing for a record-breaking ten spacewalks to be conducted in three months.

That changes Friday with spacewalk No. 421. The two are the only women on the space station.

As of Thursday, men dominated the spacewalking field, 213 to 14.

The first all-women spacewalk is scheduled for Friday, October 18, 2019.

NASA astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir will make "HERstory", as NASA is calling it, with the first all-female spacewalk.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to endorse Bernie Sanders for president
The news comes as Sanders seeks to reinvigorate his campaign in the aftermath of a heart attack and slipping poll numbers. That is why he is fighting for a humane immigration policy that treats immigrants as human beings and not criminals.

US astronauts Christina Koch (cook) and Jessica Meir (mere) will step out Friday to replace a broken battery charger.

NASA had previously planned a two-woman spacewalk for earlier this year, but it was canceled because it didn't have two spacesuits in the right size, The Wall Street Journal noted. The two astronauts will replace the faulty power regulator, which has been in operation since 2000 and failed to activate after new lithium-ion batteries were installed on the space station last week.

It seems that the all-female spacewalk, while notable, isn't an event that NASA was trying to consciously facilitate.

Friday's spacewalk is set to begin at 7:50 a.m. EDT and last about 5 1/2 hours, according to NASA.

NASA had originally planned five spacewalks for October to upgrade the space station's batteries.

"The device regulates the charge to batteries that collect and distribute power to the station".

The space agency has also pencilled in five more spacewalks to fix a cosmic particle detector, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, between November and December.

The original spacewalk would have been carried out by Mrs Koch and NASA astronaut Anne McClain.
