Bargainers for General Motors Co. and the United Auto Workers (CAW) reached a tentative contract deal Wednesday that could end a month-long strike that brought the company's USA factories to a standstill.
The UAW GM National council will meet on Thursday to review the details of the tentative deal and vote whether to recommend it for full ratification, according to the union. "And then it would take so many days for us to get parts up here", Mr. James said.
Details of GM's last offer emerged over the weekend and Reuters had reported that the company boosted the amount it plans to invest in the United States to about $9 billion from its previous offer of $7 billion. They wanted a bigger share of GM's profits as well as greater job security and a path to permanent jobs for thousands of temporary workers in GM factories.
Approximately 49,000 union workers walked off their jobs September 16, launching a nationwide strike at General Motors after a previous labor contract expired and negotiations over a new one fell apart.
GM's union-represented workers must approve any labour deal by a simple majority.
Barra had met with UAW President Gary Jones and the union's lead GM negotiator, Terry Dittes, on October 9 to push for a swift resolution to the strike. "As we await the Council's decision, please know that the outpouring of community and national support will be etched in the memories of all of us at the UAW for years to come", said Dittes.

UAW President Gary Jones said members showed what the union is all about during the strike with their "dignity, grace and solidarity". "I could not be prouder of our brothers and sisters, our National Negotiators, and the National Council as they continue to fight one day longer to secure the best deal for our members".
In Flint, UAW Local 659 President Steve Greuner posted a message to members on the union's Facebook page, cautioning them to "refrain from disseminating information provided by the media". "We're not really telling our members anything yet until we get to see if it's ratified".
In a Wednesday news release, the UAW confirmed it agreed to a tentative labor contract with the automaker.
The accord, announced by the UAW on Wednesday, may bring an end to the union's first national walkout against the carmaker in a dozen years.
There's also no guarantee that the first contract deal with GM will pass.
However, workers say they have been patient as the vehicle giant recovered from the troubles that forced a government-led bailout in 2009.
Massimiliano Allegri to bring two Juventus stars with him to Manchester United
Tottenham, meanwhile, are also keeping tabs on the ex-Juventus boss with the future of Mauricio Pochettino still unclear. Last season, Jose Mourinho was sacked by the Red Devils before Christmas and the pressure is now building on Solskjaer.
Just one day into the strike, GM stopped paying for health insurance for workers.
If the Council votes to approve this proposal, it will then become an official tentative agreement and give workers a locked-in option to vote on in the near future.
The Center for Automotive Research in MI has estimated the strike's weekly costs to GM and the UAW strike fund at $450 million and $12 million, respectively. Inflation-adjusted wages for all US auto workers have fallen 16% since 2010, and UAW workers at the Detroit Three have received only two base wage increases of 3% in the past nine years, according to vehicle.
An anonymous source familiar with the closed negotiations says two top General Motors Executives, CEO Mary Barra and President Mark Reuss, came to the table Tuesday.
The UAW National Negotiators, elected by their local unions, achieved major wins for UAW-GM members in the Proposed Tentative Agreement.
