Slotting in alongside the existing BMW M8 Coupe, the new Gran Coupe variants throws in bigger rear seats and the extra doors to better access them, but doesn't compromise on performance for that.

The "standard" M8 coupe and convertibles should hit 60 miles per hour in 3.1 and 3.2 seconds, respectively, while the Competition versions shave off a critical tenth of a second to drop the numbers to 3.0 and 3.1 seconds. Buyers looking for more velocity can option the M Driver's package, which increases the top speed to 190 miles per hour and includes M School driver training at one of BMW's two Performance Driving Schools.

Power is sent to BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system through an eight-speed M Steptronic auto. It also takes into account navigation data, so that it won't upshift between two close corners. It adds an assortment of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic components including mirror caps, a rear diffuser, a rear spoiler and inserts for the front air intakes. Turn off the specially-tuned DSC, meanwhile, and you can activate 2WD mode which locks the vehicle into rear-wheel drive only. It grows significantly from its two-door sibling, adding 7.9 inches to the wheelbase and 9 inches in overall length.

The increase in size comes at a surprisingly reasonable penalty in weight - just 185 pounds, according to BMW, for a total curb weight of 4,480 pounds.

Underneath it all there's a retuned chassis system. The M8 comes standard with an M-tuned adaptive suspension, new bushings, swivel bearings and unique strut bars. Both get electromechanical M Servotronic steering with a variable ratio, that's also drive mode dependent. It covers everything from engine and suspension characteristics, to how the steering and braking behave, and the three 4WD modes.

The model also has a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment system and a head-up display.

Braking improves, as well, thanks to standard ventilated brake discs (measuring 15.6 inches up front and 15.0 inches in the rear) with fixed, six-piston calipers. M Carbon ceramic brakes are optional. BMW's carbon fibre roof reduces the centre of gravity. The traditional twin-exhaust tailpipes finish the look at the rear.

Inside, red detailing helps distinguish the cars from their non-M counterparts. The front uses a double-wishbone design, while the rear uses five-link geometry. Ambient lighting is standard. These include forward-collision warning and BMW's Active Protection precrash mitigation system. Step up further to the Driving Assistance Professional Package, and you get adaptive cruise control that (pointlessly in the US) works at speeds of up to 130 miles per hour. It also includes driver training at one of BMW's Performance Centers in SC or California. There's also wireless charging for your phone and WiFi hotspot.
