US diplomat's wife 'claims immunity and leaves UK after fatal road accident'

The wife of a USA diplomat claimed "immunity" and fled the United Kingdom after becoming a suspect in an August hit-and-run that killed 19-year-old Harry Dunn.

Although police questioned the mother-of-three, detectives could not arrest or charge her because she claimed diplomatic immunity as her husband is an envoy to Britain.

Harry Dunn, 19, was killed August 27 after his motorcycle collided with a auto driven by the woman near RAF Croughton, a British military base near Oxford that's home to a signals intelligence station operated by the U.S. Air Force. Dunn was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The legal protection also covers dependents of diplomats. Police attempted to receive a waiver that would allow them to pursue a case against the woman but were rejected.

The UK has urged the return of the unnamed American diplomat's wife, 42, who left the country after the crash.

She is working with Britain's foreign minister Dominic Raab in a bid to encourage the woman to return.
