"People should take these names and the photos of these people and distribute them as far and wide as they can so that we shame these people", Australian Home Affairs Miniser Peter Dutton said on radio last week, referring to the Extinction Rebellion protesters.

The Extinction Rebellion movement is planning a "spring rebellion" as part of an "international wave" of civil disobedience that will peak with a fortnight of protests in London.

Similar demonstrations were taking place in Berlin, Sydney, Amsterdam and Madrid on Monday, and organizers said more were expected in up to 60 cities around the world, including NY and Washington, D.C., as part of what they called an "international rebellion".

"Many people around the world can't protest because they haven't got the resources or the time, or they're scared of the harm it might cause them", he added.

In Toronto, activists gathered near Danforth and Cambridge Avenue before making their way to the Bloor Viaduct bridge.

Police kept the peace between activists and angry drivers, some of whom got out of their cars to yell obscenities.

The protesters belonged to a climate activism organization named Extinction Rebellion, according to CNBC.

The group has also planned demonstrations at Playter Gardens Park.

In Vancouver, activists are expected to shut down the Burrard Bridge at 8:30 a.m. Commuters are advised to expect delays and plan ahead.
