'But to be clear, if we determine that someone is manufacturing or distributing illicit, adulterated vaping products that caused illness and death for personal profit, we would consider that to be a criminal act'.

So far, DPH has reported 10 circumstances to the CDC within the future of the previous month. The new total, up from 530 just a week earlier, now includes reports from 46 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. One case has been confirmed, which they've identified as the man who died.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last month its investigation into the outbreak is looking at products containing the marijuana compound THC. NJDOH categorizes cases based on CDC case definitions.

Larsen told The New York Times that the injuries to the patients resemble those in people exposed to mustard gas, a chemical weapon used in World War I. Mustard gas was used as recently as 2016 when the Islamic State fired a rocket containing the substance at USA soldiers at a military base near Mosul, Iraq.

The team of researchers at the CDC says that they would publish more data as they are gathered. The week before, September 3, 28 cases were reported, with an additional 14 potential cases being investigated.

5 of the patients reported vaping tetrahydrocannabinol - or THC, an active chemical in marijuana - while four others reported vaping both THC and nicotine, the department mentioned in an announcement. They suggest refraining from the use of e-cigarettes and vape products in an effort to avoid illness.

According to officials in Nebraska, the state's first death involved an adult over 65 who was located in the Douglas County area. According to a CDC press release approximately "77% of patients reported using THC-containing products, with or without nicotine-containing products; 36% reported exclusive use of THC-containing products; and 16% reported exclusive use of nicotine-containing products".

She added, "E-cigarettes are addictive and unsafe". Officials have said those products appear to play an important role in the outbreak. "No one knows what's in them when they are coming right off the street". The CDC states that "no consistent evidence of an infectious cause has been discovered", and as a result it is believed a "chemical exposure" is responsible for the lung injuries.
