As Joaquin Phoenix dances down those Gotham steps and into theaters this week as the Joker/Arthur Fleck, we're feeling nostalgic for the Clown Princes of Crime of our past.

Todd Phillips, the director, recently tried to clear the air: "Why it might affect you is we tried to paint [that violence] with as realistic brush as possible, so when it comes, it can feel like a punch in the stomach". (Phoenix returned to Letterman's show a year later to apologize and explain his behavior was part of a character that was then used in the documentary I'm Still Here.) Joker does deal with exaggerated representations in the late-night comedy space. "I am sorry, but he did whisper constantly while we're trying to work, and sometimes it's really hard to find the emotion you're after...", Joaquin concluded. Of switching from making comedies to dramas, Phillips says, "Go try to be amusing nowadays with this woke culture".

Phoenix was persuaded to join the read-through rehearsal, which took place at De Niro's offices in Manhattan.
