US Pres. Trump names Robert O’Brien as next national security adviser

BREAKING President Trump Announces a New National Security Advisor

Trump picks Robert O'Brien as new national security advisor

Trump would be the first president to have four national security advisers in his first term.

A longtime lawyer and foreign policy advisor to Republicans, Mr O'Brien has become one of Mr Trump's favorites for his work on behalf of Americans held prisoner in far-flung places including North Korea and Turkey.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday he's naming hostage negotiator Robert O'Brien, who Trump had monitor the criminal case in Sweden against American rapper A$AP Rocky, as his new national security adviser. He previously helped lead the department's public-private partnership for justice reform in Afghanistan during the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations. O'Brien was confirmed by the Senate.

Earlier in his career, O'Brien was a senior legal officer for the UN Security Council commission that decided claims against Iraq that arose from the Gulf War.

He has also been the only USA official consistently working on releasing Americans imprisoned in Iran. His instincts for an aggressive, interventionist foreign policy were at odds with Mr Trump's more isolationist stance. The book examines what he calls an America "in retreat" and argues for a "more involved" American role in foreign affairs. O'Brien replaces John Bolton, a vigorous proponent of using USA military force overseas and one of the main hawks in the administration on Iran. "That also makes it appropriate", he added.

Introducing O'Brien to reporters on the tarmac of Los Angeles International Airport, Trump hailed his "tremendous track record" securing the release of hostages and said "we know each other well", adding "Robert's been fantastic" as a hostage negotiator and that the United States hasn't spent any money to secure the hostages' release.
