Iran confirms it has detained three Australians over 'photographs, spying'

Kylie Moore-Gilbert, an Australian national arrested in Iran has been charged and indicted with "spying", a spokesman for the Iranian Judiciary announced on Tuesday September 17.

He said two people, thought to be British-Australian blogger Jolie King and her boyfriend Mark Firkin, had been detained for using a drone to take pictures and video of military areas and other unauthorised zones.

It had been reported that she had been convicted and sentenced to 10 years' jail, but a spokesman for Iran's judiciary said "the court will decide whether this person is guilty or not".

Iran has acknowledged for the first time that it is holding three Australian nationals, including two with joint British nationality, on suspicion of spying.

"Criminal charges have been issued for both cases and they are waiting for their trial", he said.

Canberra revealed last week that two British-Australians and one Australian were being held in Iran. It is believed they have been held for about 10 weeks.

Later, the third Australian was identified by her family as Melbourne University lecturer Kylie Moore-Gilbert who specializes in Middle Eastern politics with a focus on Gulf states.

The family of Moore-Gilbert said over the weekend that she had been held in Iran for a "number of months" while Australian broadcaster ABC reported that she has been in jail for nearly a year.

Their indictments come after Tehran's top diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif in April raised the case of Negar Ghodskani, an Iranian woman arrested by Australia in 2017.
