Republican threatens Beto O'Rourke over gun confiscation pledge

'Hell yes, we're going to take your AR-15,' O'Rourke says at Democratic debate

Beto O'Rourke on gun control: 'Hell yes, we're going to take your AR-15'

The Washington Post reports that O'Rourke's staffers notified the Federal Bureau of Investigation about the tweet.

State Rep. Briscoe Cain, a Republican, had responded to a tweet from O'Rourke echoing the former congressman's comments during the Thursday night debate.

"My AR is ready for you", he said. It's against federal law to threaten "major candidates" for president.

For decades, Democrats have avoided suggesting that the government should take back guns out of concern that such a platform would be politically toxic in much of the country.

In his television appearances on Friday, O'Rourke argued that his call for a mandatory buyback program would not imperil Democrats politically.

O'Rourke stated the obvious on twitter, calling it a "death threat". "The day after I proposed doing that, I went to a gun show in Conway, Arkansas to meet with those who are selling AR-15 and AK-47s, and those who are buying those weapons". But his forceful "hell, yes" on Thursday became one of the most memorable lines of the presidential debate. He says he supports Canada's and Scandinavia's policies of universal health care and offering paid family leave and a living wage, as well as wresting control over major institutions from a small number of wealthy Americans. AR stands for Armalite rifle. People who fail to participate in the mandatory buyback of assault weapons will be fined. "People were murdered. The language you are using and the way you are using it is risky". Meanwhile, Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Andrew Yang, Julián Castro, and O'Rourke vied to achieve some sort of breakout moment, primarily by offering more "free" stuff, sanctimoniously lecturing about how terrible America is, or by saying outrageous things about President Donald Trump (have you heard he's a "racist"?). "But it really drives home the point, better than I could have made".

In her dissent, Sotomayor said that the government's rule may be in significant tension with the asylum statute. Francisco said there is good cause for immediate implementation to avoid a surge of immigrants at the border.

Cain, an attorney, frequently uses his official social media accounts to air inflammatory and hyperbolic views.

Cain is a member of the Texas House of Representatives for House District 128, which covers an area east of Houston, where the debate was held.

The online conflict came on the heels of two mass shootings in Texas and on the night that O'Rourke debated fellow Democratic presidential candidates in Houston.
