Google Earth leads to remains of missing Florida man in lake

The remains of a man who went missing two decades ago in Florida have been found in a submerged auto visible on Google Maps. Deputies were called out to Palm Beach County retention pond August 28 on a report of a submerged auto; inside the vehicle were skeletal remains that, the sheriff's office says, were identified as Moldt on Tuesday.

According to deputies, a previous resident who had lived in the Grand Isles community in Wellington was searching around on Google Earth when he noticed what appeared to be a auto in a retainer pond behind a house.

PBSO said the current resident used his personal drone to fly over the pond and spotted the vehicle underwater.

Police discovered skeletal remains after pulling the auto out of the water, noting the vehicle's exterior was "heavily calcified and was obviously in the water for a significant amount of time". According to The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), Moldt left a night club that evening at about 11 p.m.

Rise in vaping injuries concerning for health officials
State health officials are also investigating what Forbing-Orr calls three additional unconfirmed cases. Symptoms can include shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

The vehicle can be seen clearly in the Google image.

"The vehicle's exterior was heavily calcified and was obviously in the water for a significant amount of time", the sheriff's office said, according to the newspaper. The vehicle and remains were towed to the Medical Examiner's Office for processing. One week later the remains were positively identified as belonging to Mr Moldt.

How they came to be discovered occurred in a most freaky manner after the manager of The Grand Isles housing development spotted the sunken vehicle on Google Earth and alerted the police.

"You can't determine what happened that many years ago, what transpired", police spokeswoman Therese Barbera said.

The subdivision was under construction when Moldt went missing, but the pond was already there.

Moldt had called his girlfriend at the time to tell her he was on his way home from the club but he never made it back, Newsweek reported.

According to NamUs, he was not a frequent drinker but did have several drinks at the bar.
