Kansan dies from the lung disease linked to vaping, KDHE reports

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced Wednesday that it is now mandating that clinicians across the Bay State report any suspected cases of unexplained e-cigarette or vaping-associated pulmonary disease.

About 6.7% of middle school students in New York City public schools reported using e-cigarettes past year, according to data released by the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOH).

A Kansas resident was the sixth person to die in the United States of a mysterious respiratory illness related to vaping, state officials said on Tuesday, as public health officials scrambled to understand a nationwide health problem. The CDC said it has not identified a cause of the outbreak, but all reported cases have a history of e-cigarette use, and no evidence of infectious disease has been found. It says no specific substance or product has been linked to all cases, though many cases involve people who reported vaping THC, marijuana's high-inducing chemical. Symptoms can include shortness of breath, chest pain, fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The CDC and FDA are now working together to gather all relevant information and are expected to release a report in the New England Journal of Medicine outlining the specifics of the disease they're studying, believed to be linked to e-cigarettes. "Many teens have risky misperceptions that vaping is harmless", Forbing-Orr stated.

The Centers for Disease Handle and Prevention defines e-cigarettes as units that deliver an aerosol to the person by heating a liquid that typically is made up of nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals.

Since the investigation is still ongoing, the CDC has urged people to consider ceasing the use of all cigarettes.

State health officials are also investigating what Forbing-Orr calls three additional unconfirmed cases. Furthermore, Minnesota officials said that the state's previously known vaping-related demise was an individual more than 65 years with a past filled with lung issues who had vaped illicit and perilous THC items and passed away in August. The serious lung injury was reported earlier this week and health officials are aggressively gathering patient information to determine the cause of the illness.
