Tearful House of Commons Speaker John Bercow to stand down amid Brexit chaos

If, as expected, lawmakers reject the government's attempt to call an election, he said he would quit on October 31 - the day Britain is now due to leave the EU.

A group of Labour MPs held up signs with "silenced" written on them, with one trying to hold on to Speaker John Bercow, as MPs were requested to take part in the prorogation ceremony.

"He has been dogged by controversy about his alleged bullying behaviour, he has undermined faith in politics and there is no intention on our side to nominate him for a peerage", the source said.

Bercow eventually rose from his seat, and was joined by Conservative MPs as they made the walk to the House of Lords. By 311 votes to 302, MPs approved the publication of government correspondence to suspend parliament work and documents on Operation Yellowhammer, the government's contingency plan in the event of a No-Deal Brexit.

Mr. Bercow described his 10 years as Speaker of the House of Commons as the "greatest honour" of his professional life.

Though Bercow said that he had planned on stepping down for family reasons, his departure comes amid a wave of deselections and defections within the Conservative Party.

The present Parliament is the longest in modern British political history, no Parliament having sat for so many days since the English Civil War.

'With bullying claims, his Brexit bias and a willingness to ride roughshod over established procedures, this Speaker has undermined public faith in Parliament'.

"At the 2017 election, I promised my wife and children that it would be my last", Mr Bercow told the House of Commons as his wife Sally looked on from the gallery.

"I extend my honest gratitude to John for all that he has done on our behalf and look forward to his continued support".

Peace Talks with Taliban Are 'Dead'
About 20,000 American and allied troops remain in Afghanistan, and the Taliban control or hold sway over almost half the country. As many as 14,000 United States troops still remain in Afghanistan, which Trump had earlier this year promised to bring home.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Mr Johnson was "only interested in shutting down Parliament to avoid any scrutiny".

Opposition MPs gave Mr Bercow - who will walk away with a gold-plated £1million non-contributory pension after ten years in the chair - a standing ovation.

In recent months he came under fire for a series of controversial rulings in the chamber which were widely considered to favour Remain supporters.

Bercow has been Commons Speaker for a decade, asserting his intention to face for the publish on 20 Could 2009 as a successor to earlier Speaker Michael Martin.
