Campaigning for Canada's federal election on 21 October formally began on Wednesday, as Justin Trudeau seeks a second parliamentary majority from an increasingly divided electorate.

This first-day visit on Trudeau's campaign trail sends a strong message to British Columbians, whose province will be a hot spot this election, according to University of British Columbia Political Science professor Richard Johnston.

Trudeau kicks off his campaign with a rally in the Vancouver-Kingsway riding on September 11.

Green Party leader Elizabeth May and Jagmeet Singh, the leader of the left-wing New Democrat Party, started the day with rallies.

Scheer is calling Trudeau a "liar", arguing the Liberal leader has lost the moral authority to govern and saying his goal for the next five weeks is to convince Canadians of that.

The NDP leader believes the answer is him, telling supporters he plans to talks about providing services like pharmacare and dental care, vision care and mental health services, but only by taking on "lobbyists" and "corporate interests".

Polls suggest the Liberals and Conservatives are running neck-and-neck, while the NDP and Greens are fighting for third. Now, it's his turn to face opponents who are unproven campaigners.

The appeal judgement ostensibly reverses an initial finding in the same case at Edinburgh's Court of Session last Wednesday. Jo Maugham, a lawyer involved in the Scottish case, said the government's appeal would begin next September 17.
