Staten Island's three higher education institutions ranked in the U.S. News & World Report 2020 Best Colleges guide

UofSC is No. 1 nationwide for first-year student experience

Syracuse University fell one spot in the 2020 U.S. News and World Report ranking of best national universities.

To calculate the top schools, US News focused on academic quality and placed an emphasis on outcome measures - including graduation rates, retention rates, and social mobility - with the "outcomes" category being the mostly highly weighted ranking factor at 35 percent.

In the "Best Undergraduate Teaching" category, Emory tied for the No. 40 spot with eight other universities, including the Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Georgia, Northeastern University (Mass.) and the University of California, Santa Cruz. When factoring this into the U.S. News national universities ranking, the number of institutions increased by more than 25 percent, while the regional universities decreased by about 10 percent.

Los Angeles repeated as the top public school among national universities this year.

Gov. Ron DeSantis, state lawmakers and university officials on Monday bragged about Florida State University and the University of Florida moving up in the rankings of an annual report that grades the country's top public colleges and universities. Data show that students who take U101 return to school for their sophomore year and graduate from the university at higher rates than students who don't take the course as freshmen.

"While no one wants to highlight a fall in the rankings, it's important for you and all of our constituents to understand that we have a plan for addressing this slide", he said.

Fuchs also offered kudos to the other Florida schools that saw improvements in their U.S. News rankings.

UF ranks No. 6 among public universities in Washington Monthly magazine's 2019 list of universities that do the most for their country - contributing to the public good in terms of social mobility, research and promoting public service. ISU two years ago was at No. 115 overall and No. 111 the year before that.

"It's an incredible accomplishment for Florida State University", said President John Thrasher. Children can also be eligible for the program through transferred benefits.

The University shares that spot with five peer institutions, two of them-Brandeis and Northeastern-also in MA.

UF's continuing rise in undergraduate rankings compliments a parallel sweeping rise in its U.S. News & World Report graduate rankings.

It's one of only five universities from Pennsylvania on the list.

And in San Antonio, the University of the Incarnate Word ranks 272nd nationally, and Trinity University and St. Mary's University rank first and 10th, respectively, in the Regional Universities West ranking.

U.S. News also honored Wabash as an A+ School for B Students, an institution "where spirit and hard work could make all the difference to admissions", according to the publication's criteria.
