Almost three years after the Access Hollywood tape first surfaced, Billy Bush is returning to television, and he's not doing so quietly. The new Extra host told King that "everybody at the network" knew about the Access Hollywood tape, and before it leaked, he was told that he was "good" and shouldn't "worry about it".
"And you knew there was a tape?" asked King, 64.
Bush told King that after the tape was released, he did not anticipate that he would be terminated from Today and was even assured his job was safe.

"I remember what it feels like to be all the way down", Bush said.
"I was comfortable that it wasn't going to be weaponized", he added. Arguing he had "grown and evolved" even between the tape being recorded and released, he was sure to point out that "this is nearly 2020, 15 years later", and that the scandal was ultimately about President Trump.
"Is that how you feel it was? I became a very different guy, so the guy that got fired, no question, was a very different guy". Don't worry about it. "I accounted for my small part, while the President and my employer walked away and still haven't accounted for their actions", said Bush. "It's not you. You didn't say anything, '" but two days later, that changed.

Now, Bush says he's "grateful" to be back on TV, previewing his brand new interviewing style by saying he hopes to sit down with "people who have been through something" and assuring them he won't be "super judgey".
King also asked Bush why he declined to challenge Trump in 2005 and if he had to "go along to get along". "And then, I might have gotten, 'Hey, why did you lose Trump?" "I think people that I'm working with now would say, 'Boy, he's good to work with.' Because I don't freak out if something's not right. He's the biggest guest we ha-?' I mean, there was always a little bit of - you're a little anxious around him because you just want it to end well and get out".
