Dorian upgraded to Category 4 storm as 130mph winds measured in Atlantic

Early Saturday, Dorian was centered 445 miles (715 kilometers) east of West Palm Beach.

Florida Power & Light said it has nearly 5,000 workers ready for the storm and that it was working to get additional crews to help customers who lose power.

Hurricane Dorian is an "extremely dangerous" category four storm and the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has warned of winds and storm surges.

The Charleston Animal Society is preparing for the possibility that the animals in the hurricane's path will be in need once again. If it bumps just a little west, than you're looking at really, really significant impacts.

Dorian will maintain 140 miles per hour winds through Sunday before pivoting slowly north on Monday and gradually weakening as the storm meets dry air, Mark Malick of the South Carolina State Climate Office said Saturday morning.

The timing of it nearing Florida's east coast also varies, from Monday to Tuesday.

Even if Dorian's center does not make landfall in Florida, it still could hug the coastline Tuesday and Wednesday, ripping parts of the state with destructive winds and storm surges, and heavy rain. The coastal areas of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina may be at risk if Dorian does not make landfall in Florida.

According to the National Hurricane Center's 5 a.m. forecast track update, Dorian has moved slightly north and will likely move east in the coming days.

Manatee is no longer expected to feel any tropical storm force winds.

The dispatch warned that a unsafe storm surge accompanied by large and destructive waves up to 15 feet can be expected near the shores of Eleuthera, Abaco and Grand Bahama on Sunday into Monday.

Some of the more reliable computer models predicted a late turn northward that would have Dorian skirt the Florida coast.

In the Bahamas, any remaining tourists were sent to government shelters in schools, churches and other buildings offering protection from the storm.

Storm surge could reach 10 feet (3 meters) or more just north of where the center of Dorian crosses the coast, Pydynowski said.
