The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are warning against using counterfeit and bootleg e-cigarette cartridges and liquid, the agencies said on Friday.
The warning specifically points to e-cigarettes and vape products with cannabis in them (THC or CBD), but it suggests that some illnesses have presented themselves after only tobacco use. The root cause remains unclear, but officials said Friday that many reports involve marijuana vaping.
"Stop using any vape and/or e-cigarette devices immediately", the department said Wednesday in a news release. "We strongly urge people not to vape".

The CDC issued a health advisory Friday on "severe pulmonary disease associated with using e-cigarette products".
The CDC has not identified one common product, but the CDC and Food and Drug Administration warned the public not to buy vaping products off the street.
The details of the causes were not yet known, the Health Department said. Some media outlets are reporting that the illness may be caused by high-concentrate exposure to THC, but that has not been substantiated in any way and appears to be entirely incorrect. We continue to gather information about the names of the products used, where they were purchased, and how the products were used. We'll have to wait and see what the state-specific investigations uncover, but it wouldn't be shocking to learn that most, if not all, reveal that street-bought THC products are to blame.
