Barbados-born Archer had one of the most memorable Test debuts in recent times during the second Ashes Test between England and Australia at Lord's.

The former vice-captain finished one run short of being the overall leading run scorer at the World Cup then spoke of targeting an elusive Test hundred in England. Harris managed to hit two fours before Archer had him and the skies opened up.

Out-of-form opener David Warner also arrived at training without the beard he has been sporting even since his return to worldwide cricket.

"And then today coming in at 2/25 he looked as good as anyone so far this series apart from probably Steve Smith. He likes that responsibility".

But he didn't have his batting gear and his lack of activity was a strong indication he wouldn't play, before confirmation from Langer. England coach Trevor Bayliss hinted at a reshuffle in the batting line-up, if not in personnel.

Asked how Australia planned to replace Smith in the third test, Paine told reporters: "We do it as a team".

"It (the Lord's draw) showed that without Steve, we were able to get the job done which is a positive", Head said.

"I think he's been very impressive", Taylor said. "We know what he's like, so look out the Derbyshire bowlers".

The setback does not appear to have slowed the 86-year-old's summer schedule, other than one cancelled visit to Santa Fe. The tumor was " treated definitively and there is no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body", the court said.
