Nicholas Tartaglione, an ex-Westchester cop who faces the death penalty in a quadruple homicide upstate, was being held a few cells away from Epstein on August 10, when he was found unresponsive around 6:30 a.m.

The warden was not identified in the announcement and the department had not responded to a request to confirm the name of a person connected in other documents with the Metropolitan Correctional Center.

Epstein, 66, was facing federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges and was being held without bail at the federal facility where he died.

The suspension, ordered by Attorney General William Barr, came a day after he criticised the jail's "failure". He was speaking at a police conference in New Orleans.

Epstein, whose case has raised questions about whether he received preferential treatment in the past from Justice Department officials, was found hanging in his jail cell Saturday morning, according to people familiar with the matter.

Barr added, "We will get to the bottom of what happened, and there will be accountability".
