The man is suspected of stabbing at least one woman and trying to stab more people on the street in Sydney, Australia, on Tuesday.

Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics found the injured woman inside the Hotel CBD, on the corner of King and Clarence streets.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison tweeted that the "violent attack" was "deeply concerning" but praised the "brave actions" of those who restrained the suspect.

Police did not give any further information about the incident.

They eventually knocked him down with a cafe chair, and then used a milk crate to hold his head to the footpath as first firefighters then police arrived to restrain him. Witness Megan Hales told AFP she saw a man brandishing a large kitchen knife chasing several people through the busy central business district shortly after lunchtime.

"They were significantly courageous people", Supt Wood said.

"These people are heroes, and I want to acknowledge that", he told the newspaper.

"I've always been that type of guy that I'll analyse it a bit and see the risk but we're also raised by good parents who were like, "Help people", and that's what we do".
