"Let me assure you that case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein", Barr said in remarks to a law enforcement group in New Orleans on Monday.

The medical examiner's determination is pending further information, Dr. Barbara Sampson, chief medical examiner of the City of NY, said in a press release.

The court filing Monday came in a long-running lawsuit against the US government by women who claim they were not consulted about the 2008 plea deal as required by the federal Crime Victim's Rights Act. He was awaiting trial on drug trafficking charges.

The case against Alkisi was dropped after he pleaded guilty to an immigration violation and was sentenced to 20 months in prison.

"The Federal Bureau of Prisons must provide answers on what systemic failures of the MCC Manhattan or criminal acts allowed this coward to deny justice to his victims", he tweeted.

No one else was named or charged alongside Epstein.

"We've worked so hard to get here, and he stole that from us, too", she told the newspaper.

It's not clear why his attorneys had requested that he be taken off suicide watch.

Epstein was allowed to plead guilty to lesser Florida state prostitution-related charges, serving 13 months in jail. The reporting and new attention led to the resignation of Trump administration Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, who negotiated the plea agreement when he was the U.S. attorney in Miami.
