Jeffrey Epstein reportedly dies by suicide in NYC jail

Jeffrey Epstein, the multimillionaire financier who was awaiting trial for sex trafficking girls as young as 14, was today found dead in a NY jail after apparently taking his own life.

His body was discovered at 07:30 local time (11:30 GMT) on Saturday at a facility in NY.

Epstein's death comes a day after a tranche of sealed legal documents were released for the first time providing new details about what prosecutors allege was Epstein's sex-trafficking operation.

Epstein was busted July 6 over the alleged sexual abuse of dozens of young girls in his Upper East Side townhouse and his waterfront mansion in Palm, Beach, Florida, between 2002 and 2005.

Epstein, 66, hung himself at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan before his body was discovered at around 7:30 a.m. (1130 GMT), sources told some local media outlets.

On Friday, more than 2,000 pages of documents were released related to a since-settled lawsuit against Epstein's ex-girlfriend by Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein's accusers. He landed a gig teaching calculus and physics at Manhattan's exclusive Dalton School between 1973 and 1975, according to a 2002 NY magazine profile, where his students included the son of Bear Stearns then-Chairman Alan Greenberg. That circle, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton and billionaire Leslie Wexner, all distanced themselves from the financier after his July 2019 arrest.

In 2008, Epstein had pleaded guilty to state prostitution charges in Florida.
