The incident happened at Morogoro, around 120 miles west of the capital Dar es Salaam.

Last month, at least 45 people were killed and more than 100 injured in central Nigeria when a petrol tanker crashed and then exploded as people were trying to gather fuel.

Al Jazeera's Raheela Mahomed reports.

Wilbrod Mutafungwa, the town's police commissioner, told reporters that work was ongoing to reach a "conclusive" number of those killed.

A video posted on social media showed dozens of people carrying yellow jerricans around the truck.

Bodies of those who succumbed have been moved to Morogoro Regional Hospital.

Incidents of this nature are relatively common in parts of Africa where individuals are willing to take huge risks to remove fuel from vehicles and pipelines.

In May, more than 50 people died in Niger when a tanker exploded.

In May, a similar incident occurred in Niger just a short distance from the airport in the capital Niamey, leaving nearly 80 people dead.
