"I have just been informed of a case of Ebola in Goma", Dr Aruna Abedi, coordinator of the Ebola response in North Kivu province, told AFP.

The latest person with the disease started developing symptoms on July 22, after arriving from a mining area outside the city, the health official quoted the head of Congo's Ebola response team, Jean-Jacques Muyembe, as saying in an official statement.

Reports from DRC journalists and global media outlets said the case was announced at a media briefing where the head of a presidential expert committee, Jean Jacques Muyembe Tamfum, PhD, shared details about the development. He is now isolated at an Ebola treatment center.

Goma is on Congo's heavily traveled border with Rwanda and has an worldwide airport. For months health officers had feared that an Ebola case could be confirmed there.

United Nations agencies, including WFP and the World Health Organization (WHO), are hoping that the designation earlier this month of Ebola as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern will speed up the release of crucial funding to combat it.

This has become the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak in history, with more than 1,700 people killed despite the widespread use of an experimental but effective Ebola vaccine. Containing the outbreak faces unprecedented challenges amid attacks by rebel teams and resistance by wary community residents in an area of Congo that had never experienced an Ebola outbreak before.

A Congolese health official said all measures have been put in place to ensure that the case is taken care of in Goma.

Verhoosel says people who have been infected by the Ebola virus and who have recovered, will receive food rations for one year.

The WFP spokesman says the operation is running into some problems of acceptance because of community mistrust.

After his third deployment to DRC, Pfaffman said, "We are two days before the one-year milestone of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo".
