Adam Smith had noticed a mysterious cardboard box in his mother Barbara's freezer for his entire life, but thought it was a wedding cake top, he told NBC affiliate KSDK.
When Adam Smith pulled open the yellowed door of the freezer in his mother's St. Louis apartment, he saw a familiar item.
Smith was going through the freezer when he found a box that he had seen sitting in the unit for decades - a box his mother always told him not to touch, FOX2 reported.
His curiosity took over. He told Fox2 St. Louis that his mother always told him not to touch it and he assumed it was a frozen wedding cake or something sentimental.

Now, Smith said the truth has left him with even more questions than before. "I put it back into the box and I called police right away". He was also told by a relative that she gave birth to twins, one of whom she gave up for adoption and one of whom died.
"Finding this, I'm more like confused, angry", he said. He said his mother had always been "secretive about things", and while he had asked her about the box, she made it clear that was a "no-no conversation".
"I wanted some kind of closure and I feel like I may never get any closure because my mom's gone", Smith said.
Though he's estranged from his father, Smith told the Post-Dispatch he reached out to him on social media to inform him of the discovery, only to be told that his father recalled Barbara being pregnant on their first date, and not pregnant the next time he saw her.
