Chris Paul will now likely start next season playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder. More

Shortly after the Thunder traded Russell Westbrook for Chris Paul, reports across the league stated OKC was actively shopping the nine time all-star.

The Thunder's brain trust and Paul's camp were reportedly working on trade possibilities, but after little movement on that front, both sides apparently view Paul playing in Oklahoma City this season as mutually beneficial.

Despite the Thunder's efforts to trade Chris Paul, the 34-year-old point guard may start the season in OKC. Paul has three years and $124 million remaining on his contract.

National Basketball Association inside Adrian Wojnarowski reports per ESPN that its becoming more and more likely that Paul will at least start the 2019-20 season with the Thunder as all trade talks have stalled, providing a leader to the Thunder's now young and inexperienced core, despite its efforts to rebuild. The hope is something happens after mid-December, when anyone who signed a free-agent deal is eligible to be traded.

A starting five of Paul, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Danilo Gallinari, Andre Roberson and Steven Adams has the potential to be a frisky team. Such a move would be the best outcome for both parties, as the Thunder would get more assets, and Paul would, hopefully, get to play for a playoff team.

For now, Oklahoma City doesn't feel a need to surrender draft compensation to unload Paul's contract, sources said. There's also the "what if" of epic proportions: What if David Stern allowed the Hornets to trade Paul to the Lakers in 2011, which would have made him teammates with Kobe Bryant? Miami's 2021 pick is unprotected.
