An alleged domestic violence incident has caused the WNBA to suspend Los Angeles Sparks player Riquna Williams without pay.

"Based on the investigation, consultation, and a careful weighing of all the facts and circumstances, the WNBA determined that a ten-game suspension was appropriate", the league said.

The arrest stems from allegations dating back to last December, when Williams allegedly assaulted Alkeria Davis and threatened her with a firearm. "There is an ongoing criminal proceeding and in fairness to the player, the league could have and should have awaited its completion before taking any action", said Terri Jackson, executive director of the union. Authorities said Williams arrived at Davis's residence and allegedly bashed Davis's vehicle with a skateboard before forcing herself inside the home. After a man at the home broke up the altercation, Williams reportedly went to her auto and pulled out a gun, pointed it in the man's direction and said "you'll get all 18" before leaving the scene.

In a statement, the league said it had conducted "its own internal investigation" into the incident and interviewed Williams as well as "several witnesses".

Additionally, the league will require Williams to participate in counseling. "As an organization, we abhor violence of any kind and specifically take domestic violence allegations seriously". "We will provide whatever resources we are allowed to help Riquna learn and grow from this unfortunate situation".

The Sparks signed her on May 15. She never returned following her suspension.

Davis, who says she dated Williams on-and-off for five years and had broken up with Williams only a month earlier, then opened the door.

Her suspension was set to begin Thursday with the Sparks game against the Dallas Wings, if it is not appealed. Williams faces one count of aggravated assault with a firearm. Riquna has not had a fair opportunity to fully defend herself. On Sunday, Williams played 40 minutes and scored a team-high 23 points in the Sparks' 76-71 win over the Atlanta Dream.

Assuming she doesn't appeal, Williams would return for the Sparks' final eight games, starting against the Indiana Fever on August 22.
