Three of the four progressive female lawmakers he was clearly targeting were born in the United States.
Trump later returned to Twitter to say it was "sad to see the Democrats sticking up for people who speak so badly of our Country and who, in addition, hate Israel".
"We don't leave the things that we love, and we love this country and that means we propose the solutions to fix it", Ocasio-Cortez said during Monday's press conference.
The president's remarks were widely derided and some, though not many, of his fellow Republicans spoke out against them.
"Sadly, this is not first nor will it be the last time we hear disgusting, bigoted language from the president", Tlaib said, calling for impeachment proceedings against Trump to begin.
Such a resolution could put Trump's fellow Republicans in Congress in an awkward position, forcing them either to vote against their party's leader, who has strong support among conservatives, or to effectively defend his statements.

Trump has a history of what critics consider race-baiting.
In 2017, he said there good people on "both sides" of the clash in Charlottesville, Virginia, between white supremacists and anti-racist demonstrators that left one counter-protester dead.
"I want to tell the children across this country. that no matter what the president says, this country belongs to you, and it belongs everyone", Ocasio-Cortez said. "You rely on a frightened America for your plunder", she said.
U.S. Reps Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) hold a news conference after Democrats in the U.S. Congress moved to formally condemn President Donald Trump's attacks on the four minority congresswomen on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., July 15, 2019. She is the wife of Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who had made no comment on Trump's attacks as of midday Monday.
Senator Tim Scott of SC, the only black Republican senator, said Trump made "unacceptable personal attacks" and used "racially offensive language".
But the spokesperson declined to give further remarks on the issue.
Addressing reporters, the four women - known as The Squad - all said the focus should be on policy and not the president's words. Reagan, a Republican, said that if the USA ever closed its doors to immigrants, "our leadership in the world would soon be lost".
Trump regularly used racially charged language during his campaign and continued in his presidency. As president, very little has happened on wall construction and Mexico has resolutely refused to pay for a wall.
Trump nearly certainly was referring to the four new lawmakers - Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Pressley and Tlaib - who are among the most outspoken against Trump administration policies and have made headlines in their ongoing divisions with Pelosi.
Trump was accused of being racist and divisive by many Democrats after suggesting that four female Democratic lawmakers, led by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY, should return to the "broken and crime infested places from which they came".
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a sometime Trump golf partner and adviser, called the four congresswomen "communist" and "anti-Semitic" on Fox News on Monday, but he also called on Trump to stop making such personal attacks.
"People can disagree over politics and policy, but telling American citizens to go back to where they came from is over the line", he tweeted.
"Aim higher. Take on their policies".
But Republican Congressman Andy Harris had earlier defended Mr Trump, telling WBAL radio: "Clearly it's not a racist comment".
