The 6.6 magnitude undersea quake struck at 3.39pm AEST (7.39pm NZT) on Sunday between Port Hedland and Broome, GeoScience Australia reported.

An natural disaster of magnitude 6.9 struck west of the beach resort of Broome, Australia, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). No tsunami warning has been issued.

Ms Gaunt, 53, said the quake was the talk of the neighbourhood and it was reported that items had been shaken off the shelves at the local Woolworths.

There have been reports of minor damage to buildings around Broome, but no reports of major damage.

As of 2pm as many of 800 people had logged having felt the quake with the Government website with more than 500 being registered on the north west coast. According to reports, the tremors felt from Broome all the way down to Perth.

Geoscience Australia has updated the quake after earlier reporting it as a magnitude 6.5.

This comes a day after a 5.5 magnitude quake hit off the coast of Surigao del Sur province in southern Philippines.
