He said a news conference is planned for Friday morning to discuss the charges.

At this point it is unclear whether these charges are related to previous cases.

"Mr. Kelly has declared his innocence", Johnson said.

"Most, if not all of the conduct alleged, is decades old", Greenberg wrote in a statement posted on Twitter. It accuses Kelly of engaging in sexual acts with girls under 18 and without disclosing that he had a sexually transmitted disease.

He was arrested after the indictment was handed down earlier Thursday in federal court for the Northern District of IL.

But in May, more sexual assault charges - 11 felony counts - were racked up against Kelly, and according to the New York Times, federal prosecutors in Brooklyn are expected to unveil a separate indictment on Friday containing additional charges against him. Then earlier this year, Kelly's alleged misconduct came under widely publicized scrutiny following the release of dream hampton's "Surviving R. Kelly", the acclaimed Lifetime docuseries that aired in January.

Kelly was arrested for federal sex trafficking charges Thursday night, multiple media outlets have confirmed. In February, authorities charged Kelly with 10 counts of aggravated criminal abuse. Kelly pleaded not guilty to the charges. In June, Kelly was back in court facing 11 new felony sex assault charges and various abuse in IL, to which he pled not guilty. He declined to comment ahead of that time.

Kelly was arrested on Thursday in Chicago. Fitzpatrick said Kelly's arraignment date and time had not yet been set.

For two decades R. Kelly, real name Robert Kelly, has been accused of different sexual abuse allegations. He has been sued by several women who accuse him of having sex with them when they were minors.

In an interview with CBS reporter Gayle King, Kelly became emotional and broke down in tears as they discussed allegations from his past - referring to when he was indicted in 2002 on 13 counts of child pornography before being acquitted in 2008. I'm not Lucifer. I'm a man. They lying on me!

He posted the $100,000 bail and left Chicago's Cook County Jail less than three days after he was arrested.
