"My stepson was in the house and my dog, so we just got everyone outside and then it ended".

The depth of the quake, which struck at approximately 10:33 a.m. PDT, was measured at around 5.4 miles.

Reports of scattered damage, including rock slides and fires, rolled in by midday. It was like 15, 20 seconds, maybe.

The area is associated with the Eastern California Shear Zone and has suffered quake swarms in the past, including a series of some 2,500 tremors over the course of five weeks in the summer of 1995.

President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the natural disaster.

The Los Angeles Times reports that this quake is the largest that southern California has experienced since 1994, when a 6.6 magnitude natural disaster struck in Northridge where dozens were killed and billions of damage occurred.

"The quake is near China Lake and Ridgecrest, so the area to the east of the southernmost part of the San Andreas Fault...it is a sparsely inhabited area, so the number of people who would have received damage would be much lower", Jones said.
