Former Giants quarterback Jared Lorenzen dead at 38

Former Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen has died, his family confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.

As of yesterday, the most recent update from Lorenzen's family said he was "developing some traction" but cautioned that he still was dealing with renal and cardiac issues and was "very sick". Lorenzen was able to work his way into a backup position with the New York Giants and even played with the Indianapolis Colts for a few preseason games before being cut.

On Friday, Jones tweeted that Lorenzen's mother told him that Jared had been taken to the hospital for an infection.

Lorenzen, who battled weight issues both during and after his playing career, was hospitalized last week.

"Jared's overnight was uneventful and that is a good thing", Lorenzen's family said in a statement to Kentucky Sports Radio.

Lorenzen was a star and a cult hero at Kentucky in the early 2000s.

Lorenzen wasn't selected in the 2004 National Football League draft but was later picked up by the Giants. He stayed with the organization for four years, winning a Super Bowl as Eli Manning's understudy in 2007.

He went on to play indoor football for the Northern Kentucky River Monsters in 2013 - and played well until suffering a broken leg, which ultimately ended his career. May he rest in peace.
