Ash Barty Claims World Number One After Birmingham Victory

New world number one Ashleigh Barty has suffered a pre-Wimbledon injury scare, withdrawn from this week's Eastbourne grasscourt tournament with a recurrence of a right arm injury.

Since then the only way has been up for the Queenslander who this month became the first Australian woman to win the French Open for 46 years and on Sunday won the Birmingham grasscourt title to confirm her rise to number one in the rankings.

"It's an injury that we've had to manage since I was 16 years old". Just a bone stress injury and we need to look after it.

"We've got a big couple of weeks coming up; make sure we're ready to go, but we'll certainly be having a beer or two".

Australia's Ashley Barty poses with the trophy after beating Germany's Julia Goerges during the final match of the Nature Valley Classic at Edgbaston Priory Club in Birmingham, England, Sunday June 23, 2019.

"In the next few days, I will cope with my injury carefully, ensuring I'm well braced for the match in the comming week", Barty said. If she had played a lot this week then maybe Wimbledon is not a viable option.

"Even though my mind wants to do it, the limits of my body have prevented me to maintain and play at a consistent high level as I expect from myself".

Barty, who began the day as the top-ranked player in the world, leapfrogging Naomi Osaka, said: "It hasn't sunk in yet, to be honest".

"I've never found the change from clay to grass too hard", said Barty, whose victory in a grass-court event in Birmingham, England Sunday took her to world No.1. She lost in the third round of the French Open, while Barty went on to claim the title on the clay at Roland Garros.

"It's been the most incredible time of my life".

"I'm so proud of my team, the work that they do".

A child prodigy who was introduced to tennis by her parents when she was five years old, Barty reached world No.2 in junior tennis and was a two-time grand slam doubles finalist by the time she was 18. She returned to the tour 2016, and has won six singles titles (three this year) and eight doubles titles (including the 2018 US Open). "I really do have the best team in the world".
