Weather warning for heavy rain and floods in Nottinghamshire

A very unsettled spell of weather is expected to affect many parts of England and Wales this week. The widespread rain this morning will turn more scattered this afternoon as a low pressure system travels over Kentucky and into Ohio.

According to the Met Office, Herstmonceux in East Sussex had had the worst of the rain by 5pm on Monday, with 30mm.

A flood alert has already been issued for south-east London, and the Met Office issued an amber severe weather warning for heavy rain in London and the south.

Many areas will see some 20mm of rainfall, with between 40mm and 60mm falling in some isolated spots.

The yellow weather warning is in place from today until 12pm on Thursday (13 June), with heavy rain expected throughout the region throughout the day.

As the low pressure system moves closer it draws in warmer air from the continent and the two combined provide "ideal conditions" for the rapid development of thunderstorms.

If your plans today take you outdoors, be sure to have the umbrella handy through at least the middle of the afternoon. This will keep the chances for thunderstorm alive and also, cool down afternoon highs to start next week.

The areas now most likely to affected by the warning include; Manchester, Warrington, Chester and Liverpool.

Some areas of south east England could get as much rain this evening as they typically do during the whole month of June. Calm wind becoming west around 5 miles per hour in the afternoon.

Wet and windy conditions are set to last well into the week, with cooler-than-average temperatures for this time of year.

Any of these will die out overnight, with temperatures resting at between six and eight degrees celsius in light to moderate northerly breezes.
