The company needs federal approval for its plan to better understand groundwater use impact on the nearby Doongmabulla Springs before first extraction of coal.

Based on this advice, it was satisfied the GDEMP sufficiently established the main source aquifer of the springs as the Clematis Sandstone.

Adani gets environmental nod for coal mine in Australia.

The approval potentially paves the way for half a dozen new thermal coal mines to come on line in Australia by opening up Queensland's remote Galilee basin with rail infrastructure to the coast 320 km (200 miles) away at Abbot Point.

On May 31, Adani won the first approval from the Queensland state government to protect the endangered black-throated finch bird population as part of its crucial environmental plan at the site of its mine project.

SAN FRANCISCO - Twitter deletes accounts linked to foreign governments
The 4,800 accounts were not a unified block, said Yoel Roth, Twitter's head of site integrity in a blog detailing its actions. Many of the Iran-linked accounts tweeted out news content, with an angle that benefited the country.

The government approved the infrastructure project last year that would see a 100km-long pipeline constructed to transport 12.5bn litres of water a year from the Suttor River and Burdekin basin.

Some water experts have warned the sacred springs, which are located near the edge of the mining lease, could permanently dry out if the mine proceeds.

"Adani will never happen", Professor Peter Newman at Curtin University's Sustainability Institute said. And use a bore in a layer of claystone that separates the springs from the mine, so there's an early warning trigger for risky water-level drops.

After years of delay, the Queensland government finally gave the coal mine the green light to begin construction.

The project has been the subject of a fierce political fight, with supporters saying it will bring much-needed jobs to rural Queensland but opponents warning of a new generation of coal exports that will be burnt in India and China and help further degrade the planet.

Johnson favourite in race to succeed May as British PM
It is thought that Home Secretary Sajid Javid - who secured 23 votes in the ballot on Thursday - may seek Mr Hancock's backing. Johnson, a former foreign secretary, won Thursday's ballot with 114 votes, more than the next three candidates combined.

"The government conceded it did not properly consider more than 2000 public submissions from Australians with concerns about the mine and the water scheme", she said.

The state's environment minister, Leeanne Enoch, told the Queensland parliament the plan was approved "on the basis of significant commitments and amendments to continue to undertake important monitoring work over the next two years and throughout the life of the mine".

The Australian Conservation Foundation said the Queensland government had "put politics ahead of science". CEO of Adani Mining Lucas Dow said the company is ready to start work on the Carmichael Project and deliver the jobs these regions so badly need.

"It is a great win today for Queenslanders and for job creation in Queensland".

Critics say the project's true environmental impact remains unclear.
